Description
Abandoned Stamp Card No 7 – Billy Hughes
Early in May 1953 the Note Printing Branch prepared designs for a memorial stamp to honor W. M (Billy) Hughes. He had died 6 months earlier in 1952. For some reason the art work did not progress beyond the preliminary art work. No precedent existed for a stamp honoring an Australian Prime Minister. The artist is unknown.
Hughes was Australia’s World War One Prime Minister and as 2019 is the 100th Anniversary of the Versailles Peace Conference this is a fitting souvenir of his contribution not only to Australia but to world affairs.
