Daisy Bates Abandoned Stamp Card
The Daisy Bates design was prepared in January 1964; the portrait being based on a photograph in Daisy Bates’ book, The Passing of the Aborigine (1938). The Famous Women stamps were to be recess (intaglio) printed in “medium” size format, 23.5 x 28.5 mm.
The 2s.6d denomination was for placement purposes only, since the actual value had not been determined. The Famous Women stamps did not proceed. By this stage, the Famous Australians stamps (1968-73) were being planned. A series of Famous Women stamps was later issued to coincide with International Women’s Year in 1975.
